Tom Hall on unofficial TUIT

Post by VikingBoyBilly »

I had a small exchange with the big Tom on fb, and he agreed to let me share this statement with you guys:

So there you have it. He's slightly out of touch, but not because he wants to be. Maybe by the time he retires he'll be making keen mods with the rest of us =)

Wow, this is all very cool! Thanks for doing this!

I find it really interesting that he feels the fans are living his dream by making Keen. Its really tragic in a way.

It would be awesome if he did do some mods or even fangames (but then, would it really be a fangame?) when he retires.

This is sufficiently awesome news.

While it doesn't really change anything, it's cool to see the creator of Keen give a nod of approval to the unofficial TUIT trilogy, as well as give his approval of modding in general.

I really hope he does get the rights to Keen.

I say we all spam John Carmack, demanding Keen justice.

Wow, that was quite a response! I hope he enjoys playing them when he gets to - it'd probably be a weird experience to play mods of a game you made decades (assuming retirement is not in the next decade) ago.

Nice questions VBB.

I think Lava89 pogo'd the skypest on the head with his "tragic" interpretation.

Someone should email this thread to iD.

I'm picturing Carmack reading this, a single tear running down his face and his heart growing three sizes and him throwing open the window to tell passersby that "The Universe is Toast" will be made after all and that Tom himself will help Carmack design it. It's a pretty funny image.

Really? I'm picturing a bunch of "Cease and Desist" letters arriving at every Keen fansite on the planet for creating mods...

Yeah but that's too realistic a scenario to be funny :P

How do we know that Hall cares at all about DOS games anymore?

I think that is a terrible idea. First of all, Keen would have never been made had it not been for him. He gave life to keen.

Second, I think that we are doing a far better job at giving keen more than enough justice with mods and discussing keen stuff than ANY company EVER could.

Yeah but that's too realistic a scenario to be funny Cheeky
I have seen fan games get shut down. Very promising fan games, because of cease and desist.
Therefore this scenario is very realistic.

Basically Carmak gave keen life before, and he chooses to give keen life now. Or maybe he doesn't care. Maybe both. The point is that he can kill the community so fast if he wanted to. He has not, therefore we have nothing to complain about.

Thanks Keening_Product! :)

Well he has to care about Keen, since he has said many times that Keen as a character is an extension of his childhood. Now does he care about DOS Gaming in general? I'm not sure, but does it matter?

I think the most important thing is that the team who made Keen 7-9 got, at the very least, a small acknowledgement. Which to me, also means that us as a community was acknowledged by one of the co-creators of Keen. That has to be awesome for that reason alone-- regardless if there will be official Keen games down the road. Wouldn't any fanbase want that?

I think it would be pretty amazing if in 10 years he finally sits down to play the mods and finds as much enjoyment and fascination as we all did from his (team's) original work. It would have to well and truly make up for not having the opportunity to expand the series in the commercial realm.

I think that any keen fan will find close to as much enjoyment in the games. :)

Oh, one more thing...
...I kinda suspect it might not be good to issue transcripts of discussions with people who did not give their consent to them being released. I think Hall didn't give consent to have this content here... it's not too important, but still, I'd never post an entire convo like that...

A lot seems to get lost in translation with Scarlet.
