Caricature of Tom Hall in TED5
Caricature of Tom Hall in TED5
While browsing through the TED5 source code, I stumbled upon a file named _TOM.PIC that contains a ... caricature.... of Tom Hall. Apparently, this was just a (bad) joke that John Romero put in there during development.
No, I'm not going to post that picture here. That would problably get me banned for one reason or another.
I just wanted to know if someone has seen this before and knows how to get TED to show this picture. I didn't find any code that would use this picture and in the only place that contains a reference to the pic file is commented out in the source, so the image probably isn't even included in the compiled EXE. But I didn't check that yet.

Is a "caricature" what I think it is?K1n9_Duk3 wrote:While browsing through the TED5 source code, I stumbled upon a file named _TOM.PIC that contains a ... caricature.... of Tom Hall. Apparently, this was just a (bad) joke that John Romero put in there during development.
Anyway, I guess you could just link the picture and warn about its content if you really want to upload it.
"Caricature" doesn't usually mean anything bad - are you sure you have the right word?
Whichever, as CKeen said, just link us to it with NSFW warnings if necessary...

Until you post the damned picture, this thread is absolutely worthless.
Honestly, what was the point of spiking our curiosity like this just to leave us hanging?
And like DHeadshot said... A "caricature" is normally not a bad thing...
But I'm assuming the image is of a pornographic nature since you're afraid to post it.
Anyway, I am thoroughly curious and disappointed by this thread.

Seriously, if it's just a caricature of Tom Hall then nobody here worships him so bad that they'll be offended by a bad depiction of His Holiness...and if anybody were upset by it then they're insane anyway. And if it has NSFW content, then just provide a link and tell us so. The moderators aren't that prudish that they'll ban you if you warn everybody in advance, especially given that this is a bit of Keen history in itself.Paramultart wrote:Anyway, I am thoroughly curious and disappointed by this thread.
I'm excited to see...
Well, at first I wasn't quite sure what I saw in the picture, so it's not that explicit. But the _TOM.OBJ file contains the string "TomCocksuck", so there you go.Paramultart wrote:But I'm assuming the image is of a pornographic nature since you're afraid to post it.
Only click here if you've read the text above.
PS: According to the look of the image, I'd say it was draw by Adrian Carmack.

My guess is that John Romero was pissed off because Tom found some errors/bugs in TED5 that John had to fix. Here are some lines from the TED5.C:wiivn wrote:That was a bad joke, but what's the story behind it? That would be more interesting.
Code: Select all
// May 19 91 - Almost got the Flood Fill mode working...Tom
// started drawing maps a little early & now I need to add
// a little kludge-fix to reformat his old maps...
//
[...]
// Jun 26 91 - v0.17: Made LAUNCH with ICON CHANGE ctrl-alt-L
// because garg was having problems...adding Unused Tile
// Scan...fixing a couple minor Tom-irritants...
[...]
// Jul 23 91 - v0.26: Only write out .H if it needs to...got the
// SnapPaste feature in that Tom wanted...
[...]
// Aug 08 91 - v0.28: I can't believe this garg! Mr. Tom decided
// to enter the value "0xF00D" into the map, which was my secret
// value for passing an ESC press back from "inputint". I made
// it a #define now!

I asked John Romero about this picture in 2002 and he said:
"Hahahaha! Wow, I forgot all about that picture. I can't believe it's
in the TED5 source files! It's basically a pic that Adrian drew of Tom
getting Adrian's dick blasted into his face with Adrian saying "Sorry!".
It's because Tom and Adrian used to share a worktable together and Tom
would always bump the table while Adrian was drawing graphics with the
mouse and Tom would say, "Sorry!" That picture never appears in Ted5
anywhere.
