Daniel Cook, the guy who did the artwork for Tyrian, talks about an old, unfinished RTS on which he worked. The blog post includes a zip file that has artwork for the game.
EDIT: A few more relevant posts from his blog that provide free Tyrian-style artwork:

I cannot agree with this sentiment more. Innovation and creativity are largely eschewed in favour of playing it safe and sticking to what works, right to the letter of it. Seems like only the little guys are still experimenting at the level Cook describes (reinvention), but as long as that passion is kept alive by someone, we'll be okay.I believe strongly that genres evolve in simple steps based on modifications to previously successful games... Unfortunately, in the game industry, massive success breeds design stagnation.
Really interesting article. Thanks for the read.

It works for pokemon, but that's only because it's more of a "game" in the traditional sense of the word before video games were invented.
I guess that's the same train of thought regarding multiplayer fps games these days... except it's false. Just make another quake or Half Life in the xen dimension, with the only multiplayer focus being co-op or something, pleez, I don't care for your stupid gigantic skyrim, zenimax, or that duty garg that's interchangeable with Epic's gears of call of fail.
(edit: yes, I can say they're bad because I never played them)
