Partially too, but word of mouth matters a lot too. Splatoon is doing unusually well considering it's a new IP, for example.

Really? Well let's take a look at a few things. Let's take the Gamecube, hailed by many as the greatest system for innovation. It has on it Zelda Wind Waker, Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime; games hailed as some of the best and most innovative in their franchises, word of mouth could hardly stop drooling over their collective awesomeness. And of course it has Animal Crossing, Pikmin and Eternal Darkness; games that blazed their own unique path on the cutting edge.

But what sold on that system? Mario Kart. Also Melee. Nothing else even got NEAR those sales figures. Word of mouth, sure.

But ok, let's look at a real game changer; Portal. 1 & 2 have sold about 9 million copies. About as much as Bioshock and Bioshock infinite. Cool beans. It's also about as much as the 8th, 8TH installment of Mario Party. Remember Wind Waker? 3 million in sales despite glowing, nay perfect reviews from gaming magazines.

Splatoon is an aberration and not even that much of one. We'll soon hide back under our comfy warm blanket of conformity.

Now can anyone update me on the Doom storyline? Because I'm quite sure the first Doom was 'This moon was taken by hell.' then 'Now you're in hell' then 'Now all of Earth is hell and few leftover humans must flee' Given that that would leave humanity at rather a disadvantage, how did the series keep going? Did humanity come back and kick butt? ( think that was the plot of 'final doom' or something.) After Earth is overrun what is left?

Story?, what Story? ;p
Doom sacrificed the story for it's superb Fps Gameplay:
pickup first-aid kits to heal, armor to decrease health damage taken, when damaged
and the speed to out run your own rockets and easily dodge dæmon projectiles coming your why
get demons of diferent kind (or any zombie) to attack each other

The Story pretty much is Mars, Dæmons & you. tacking the express elevator to hell, Avenging your Pet bunny daisy (just roll with it) on the way out,
get back to a Hell on earth, kill more dæmons and Facing of with the Iron of Sin: oremor nhoj

Doom (4) looks and feels more like a Bastard child of Halo and Mortal kombat
and most of the inspiration for it comes from Rage, which is an Outrage!

I'm of the unpopular opinion that Zelda Wind Waker, and it's mario equivalents Luigi's Mansion and Mario Sunshine were just blah. They had this strange combination of "gimmicky, yet trite." I guess that one phrase there describes the Wii itself. I might like them better if they weren't too freaking easy. Those games don't stand up to hardcore Keen Vorticons. I loved Animal Crossing and Metroid Prime. Too bad nintendo screwed up and decided metroid shouldn't be an FPS, resulting in Other M :dead2

But it must have *some* story in the same way pornography doesn't just go straight to the bedroom. There has to be a guy arriving to check the plumbing or whatever. Surely the Doom series has some sort of narrative?

The first one does... after that, Tom left.

Well, the game seems to take place in an alternate timeline altogether so I wouldn't say The New Order retcons Keen. I mean it's like a giant "what if" scenario.

That, and Keen is pretty much dead to the developers (this is kind of noted in Doom 2) the only ones who acknowledge Keen anymore is... well, us. The fans and the mod community. We keep him alive.

I don't think the new Doom is going to suck (yet, I need to see more. Looks good to me so far although there ARE a few things I disagree with. Like getting health from killing enemies) but it is supposed to be a reboot.

I think it isn't just that.
If you read Masters of Doom, Adrian Carmack hated doing all of the sprite art in Keen, because he's really edgy and hates cute things. More than likely, Adrian put it in the game as a sort of revenge for enduring months of doing something he didn't like doing. Tom was no longer part of Id Software at that point.
