Social Networking for Commander Keen Mods

Post by Commander Spleen »

On these pages I'll post mini reviews about various Keen mods at irregular intervals. Mainly intended to broaden the awareness of the amazing work created in this community and hopefully recruit some new Keeners to the PCKF and Keen:Modding in the process.

Depending on interest a secondary group may be spawned for modding related discussion, but I will aim to direct people to Keen:Modding before resorting to that.

Review Submissions

I'm open to submissions of reviews about mods or utilities, tutorials on how to play the games on modern hardware, general or specific modding tutorials, etc. Reviews should be as concise as possible.

Email content and associated images to jimage at gmail dot com.

If you would like a review to be considered as an official Commander Keen Mods post, some

Keep a neutral stance
Exclude your personal opinion and evaluate the mod's strengths and shortcomings on their own merit. Posts that fall outside of this criteria will be classified as opinion pieces.

Avoid rankings
Try not to declare a mod better/worse than another. Comparing other aspects such as difficulty is acceptable. This page is about presenting mods to a broader audience in a way that they might consider playing each one.

So is that real or did the cliffhanger at the end never get resolved?

I made a joke mod to resolve it for some april fool's day, don't honestly know what happened to it.

I wrote a review of Crash on Gobo III. Will you make it a main status, spleen?

There are two parts of this review that I'll mark as examples of the aforementioned quality assurance:

* Excluding your personal opinion and evaluating the mod's strengths and shortcomings on their own merit. For guest reviews I'll make allowances in the context of an opinion piece, but if you intend for a review to be an official Commander Keen Mods post, it needs to remain fairly neutral.

* Avoid ranking mods against each other. I'll leave in the part mentioning Ceilick's later mods but trimmed the Yorphius II comparison. Comparing difficulty is fine, so I've also left that in. This page is about presenting mods to a broader audience in a way that they might consider playing each one, not figuring out which work is the "best". If you don't think people should play a particular mod, better not to mention it at all.

Kind of nice, but srsly completely unopinionized reviews are kind of besides the point of a review.

Perhaps review is the wrong word, more like synopsis or something. But yeah, I'm finiding it difficult to maintain a relatively neutral stance on the next couple I'm looking at so it may be necessary to loosen that restriction. But it would still be ideal to keep a balance where possible.

I'm writing a big review on Ruin of Roib, so I hope that's not the one you're doing.

The tiles and various other artwork make impressive use of the EGA palette
8) Actually that's not the ega palette anymore so technically...

With the latest Morticore submission, I've started adding an option to play online using emdosbox. There have also been entries for Lego Keen and Clouds Unseen since the last post here.
