Gamer's Edge and the Founding of id Software

Post by Flaose »

As you may know, I love both classic video games and video editing, so from time-to-time I combine my hobbies to make YouTube videos. My latest project is a series that talks about the Lost Games of id Software.

The first video of that series, which I finally finished last month, talks specifically about the founding of id Software (hence the title), and how Scott Miller convinced them to jump ship from Softdisk and make the Commander Keen trilogy for Apogee. Check it out below:

Extremely well made and informative vid. I must keep abreast of those lost games as you go through them, they look quite fun!

I still think the best telling of the story though is your 'DDICI' mod from 2003. :)

I dunno. I don't like the classical music you're using. Also, the whole video is a bit chaotic and was, like, throwing some facts in the face of viewers, and really quick. If I already didn't know about some of the id history, I wouldn't understand all of what was said. Overall, it was more like an intro and not an actual episode of what you're trying to do.

Yes, it was more like an intro. He didn't say it wasn't. And I really enjoyed the classical music. Moreover, I found it very easy to follow even if I didn't already know that history.

*sigh* I guess we need at least one pessimist on the forum.

Flaose, keep up the good work. I want to see more of this!

Dave, don't be dangerous now.

Aaaah, so now the setup of Slordax makes sense!

Is that Mario demo available anywhere?

Thanks for the kind words, guys! I appreciate you voicing your opinion as well, wiivn!

I'm a little surprised to hear that. Do you have any suggestions on how I could make things less chaotic in future videos?

Well, it is the first of a multi-part series, so it was meant to be an intro (hence the Part 1 in the title). :)

I'm glad someone still remembers that one! It was a lot of fun to put together (and I was glad to see how close I was when Romero released the real thing a few years later).

Unfortunately it's not. I sent a tweet to John Romero a few months ago asking if I could get some footage from it (though secretly hoping to get a copy of the game for myself in order to release an exclusive first look at the game). About a week later, for Keen's 25th, he posted a playthrough of most of the demo, which can be seen here. Hopefully one day we'll be able to get our hands on the full thing!

Thanks, once again! Part 2 (Dangerous Dave) should be out sometime in the next two months.

I enjoyed that backgrounder and am looking forward to seeing the rest of the series. I think it's a good subject to tackle, and your storytelling is good.

Rescue Rover! I never realised that was made by the ID team!
