Should I add depixelizing filter to my videos?

Post by PiranhaGreg »

Hi, I plan make some videos from CK and I can't decide whether I should add xBR filter to them.

Here is a small comparison. Original on the left side and with xBR filter on the other one.

I prefer unfiltered, pixelated goodness.

Likewise. You will find many pixel purists on this forum.

Pixels will of course remain the gold standard as far as Keen is concerned. But trying something new has always been very much encouraged around these parts. So I say go for it!!!! Besides, that smoothed over look has become something of a trend in Keenish stuff in the last couple of years. Your videos would occupy a natural niche within this trend!!

Filtering is blasphemy.

The first thing I do when I play any sourceport of any FPS (like Quake, Doom, et cetera) is turn off the turd-awful filtering.

Bleck.

It's fascinating that there appears to be an even distribution of people on both sides, not very helpful for making a decision except for the comment section. I'm not completely sure which I like, on one hand the filter still makes it look slightly pixelated, but I usually prefer no filter.

Same here, filtering takes a nice sharp image and makes it look disgusting. Even the supposedly advanced filters look awful to me.

A saw this on the Chasm Backer forum awhile back

and for Chasm i looked pretty well, but it also Rendered the whole game in that Graphical setting
(although the shoulder pad on the player character had a life on it's own when standing idle...)
so the textures would have to be tweaked, to render Right for this Filter.

Although, i Prefer the Pixels as I'm from the 80ty's
but Younger people from the 2000-ish may enjoy this "HD" xBR filter more
they likely don't have Nostalgia for pixilated Graphics.

Yes, absolutely, me too. I try to do the same with virtual dub (neirest neighbour pixeling) and upload it to my Classic Gaming channel at http://Youtube.com/ClassicRetroG.
